Criminal Court Cases in Huerfano County
Huerfano County belongs to Colorado's Third Judicial District. One clerk operation at Huerfano Combined Court maintains both District Court and County Court files. District Court hears felonies. County Court hears misdemeanors and the early stages of felony cases, including preliminary proceedings. Walsenburg Municipal Court is different. It handles alleged violations of city ordinances, not state criminal prosecutions.
That division controls where a court case lookup succeeds. A state complaint, information, plea, judgment, or sentence belongs with Combined Court. A city citation may remain in municipal court and never produce a county criminal case. Start with the issuing agency and charge authority when the court is unclear.

One Huerfano Clerk, Two Courts
The shared counter prevents one common mistake: District and County Court are not two distant record offices. The Combined Court clerk can route a request to the proper case level. The separately elected County Clerk and Recorder cannot retrieve criminal files; that office handles elections, motor vehicles, and recorded real estate instruments.
The Judicial Center contact page identifies the case-file location and public counter. Its official image and contact block show the office a requester needs.

The clerk should be asked for a court record search, a register of actions, or named documents. Filings are not accepted by fax or email, and a records requester should confirm the permitted delivery route.
Huerfano County Case Record Searches
The free Colorado Judicial Branch docket search is the first online stop for a hearing. It is a calendar, not a full case archive. The live interface requires a date or range plus another filter. Select the Third Judicial District, Huerfano County, the courthouse, and County Court, District Court, or both. A case-number search separates the four-digit year, case class, and sequence. Party searches distinguish individuals from businesses.
| Search field | How to use it | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Date or range | Choose today, week, month, three months, six months, or a date | This is the hearing date, not filing date |
| District and county | Choose Third and Huerfano | Districtwide results can include another county |
| Court type | County, District, or both | Municipal cases are separate |
| Case number | Enter year, class, and sequence | Each segment must match |
| Party or attorney | Use name, business, or bar number | A name alone may match more than one person |
Results can show date, time, duration, name, case number, hearing type, location, appearance type, and courtroom. Plea Hearing, Sentencing, Arraignment, and Appearance on Bond describe planned events. They do not state the outcome.
The official docket interface shown below helps illustrate why a calendar result must be followed by a file request.

Use the case number from the result when contacting the clerk. That small step cuts namesake errors and speeds document retrieval.
Start With Huerfano's Register
Ask for the register of actions before ordering a broad file. It summarizes charges, sentences, and minute orders, letting a reader identify the complaint, disposition, plea, judgment, or sentencing order actually needed. The newer online record and document request asks for contact details, case number, filing year, county, party names, and other identifiers. A date of birth may help when known.
The request form offers criminal-document choices such as Complaint or Information, Disposition or Sentence Order, Protection Order, Ticket, and Register of Actions. Inspection, copies, certification, and exemplification are distinct products. A certified copy carries the clerk's formal authentication.
| Service | Published charge |
|---|---|
| Copy page | $0.25, with a $15 copy cap for parties or attorneys, not nonparties |
| Name search | $5 |
| Certified or exemplified document | $20 per document |
| Transcript of judgment | $25 |
| Certificate of satisfaction | $20 |
| Research or redaction | $30 per hour in 15-minute increments after the first hour |
Actual off-site retrieval costs may apply to archived records. The published response target is normally three business days unless extenuating circumstances exist.
What a Criminal Case File Contains
A case file tracks the prosecution after charges reach court. It differs from the arresting agency's incident report and from a CBI criminal-history compilation. Public access varies by document, but the core court fields help a reader connect each charge to its final status.
| Case identity | Case number, court, county, type, and filing date |
|---|---|
| Parties | Defendant, prosecuting party, and public attorney entries |
| Charges | Description, statute, class, and current charge status |
| Docket events | Complaint, bond, arraignment, motions, hearings, plea, trial, judgment, warrant, and recall |
| Disposition | The result for each count, not merely the case-level label |
| Sentence | Custody, probation, restitution, and public financial entries where available |
The Huerfano judges and staff page identifies the current clerk and judicial staff connected to this local court operation.

Staff listings help confirm the official office, but a judge's name is not a good substitute for the case number or party details.
Walsenburg Cases Need Another Search
A Walsenburg ordinance charge belongs to Municipal Court even though the city and Huerfano Combined Court sit in the same county seat. The state docket is therefore not a complete index of local citations. Read the citation for the named court, then call the municipal clerk when the charge rests on city code.
Municipal procedure should not be generalized to County or District Court. Walsenburg publishes its own rules for pleas, jury demands, fines, and city ordinance penalties. State crimes remain with the Combined Court clerk. Keeping those routes separate prevents a false conclusion that a missing state docket means the citation disappeared.
Read Huerfano Case Outcomes
Charge status must be read count by count. A dismissal ends that charge without a conviction. An acquittal is a not-guilty result after trial. A conviction follows a guilty plea or finding and entry of judgment. A deferred judgment begins with a guilty plea, but judgment is delayed while the person completes conditions; successful completion may lead to dismissal.
- Disposition
- The result of a charge or case.
- Arraignment
- The hearing where charges and a plea are addressed.
- Register of actions
- The chronological summary of filed events, orders, charges, and minutes.
- Sentence
- The court-ordered consequence after conviction.
CBI can explain compiled criminal-history fields, but it cannot supply the signed court document that proves a final result. The CBI records FAQ shown here makes that distinction useful for self-review.

When the CBI entry and court disposition conflict, obtain the certified court order first, then follow the official correction route.
Criminal Case Stages in Huerfano County
Each stage creates a different type of entry. A calendar may show only the next event, while the register and filed orders show what occurred. The basic flow is:
Charges Filed → Arraignment → Pretrial → Plea or Trial → Disposition → Sentencing
A felony may begin with County Court preliminary work and then proceed in District Court. Motions, bond reviews, competency issues, or continuances can add steps. A plea and sentencing can also occur at one hearing. Never infer a result from the hearing label alone.
Note: Filing, hearing, disposition, and sentencing dates mark different events and should remain separately labeled in any case summary.
When Huerfano Cases Look Missing
A missing online result does not prove no case exists. The date filter may exclude it. The file may be archived, sealed, suppressed, juvenile, not yet filed, or held by Walsenburg Municipal Court. Try the proper court type and a wider date range, then contact the clerk with full name and approximate year.
For an archived file, ask whether off-site retrieval is required and request the register first. Protected, suppressed, juvenile, and some probate documents may require government photo identification. If a city citation is involved, call the municipal counter rather than repeating a state docket search.
Access Rules for Case Records
Colorado court files do not use the same request path as sheriff reports or general county administrative records. Ask the Judicial Branch clerk for case documents. Colorado Public Access to Information and Records Rule 2 governs Judicial Branch administrative records, while court rules, statutes, and clerk procedure control case-file access.
Public views can omit sealed cases, juvenile matters, victim and minor details, protected identifiers, and restricted documents. Redaction is not proof that the underlying event did not occur.
The Huerfano clerk can explain whether a record is electronic, archived, sealed, or available only in part. For a city ordinance file, use Walsenburg Municipal Court. The city pages for Walsenburg and La Veta explain those local routes without treating municipal and state cases as one system.
